Traditional membranes are meant to be flexible; however, they sometimes don't cope well with structural movement. Cracks might break the material or move it, especially around seams and edges. Plus, as the material ages, it might start to dry out. If this happens, the cover could start to crack, especially if it is applied outdoors where it is exposed to sun and rain.

Alternative, liquid membranes are more flexible. They adhere strongly to just about any surface and move with it. They can stretch and cover small cracks that might become a problem later. Plus, these products typically retain their original properties even as they age. They are less likely to crack or start to peel.
